SUMMARY OF THE JOB :

Reporting to the Manager of the Small Business Loan Center (“SBLC”), the incumbent is responsible for the day-to-day functions of the underwriting segment within the SBLC. Supervises the team as it relates to analyzing, reviewing and approving credit risk in both existing and potential new small business loan relationships. Provides training technical expertise to other members of SBLC staff. The incumbent is responsible for interpreting, clarifying, developing and implementing department procedures. Promotes and encourages a highly responsive customer focused environment that is sensitive to the needs of both internal and external clients.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Oversees day to day operations of the SBLC underwriting team.

  • Exercises independent decision making relative to all SBLC loan decisions.

  • Distributes applications for credit to SBLC underwriting team and manages the process and to ensure timely decisioning.

  • Using commercial credit scoring models and prudent personal judgment, the position involves making sound recommendations to manager of SBLC regarding loan structure, collateralization, risk rating and overall creditworthiness in order to facilitate lending decisions.

  • Provide/assist in training of Business Banking Officers (“BBO”), branch managers or market managers in the submission of loan applications and the parameters used to make loan decisions.

  • Interacts directly with BBOs, branch managers or market managers to convey findings and recommendations in order to arrive at final loan structure and insure the generation of good quality commercial loan assets.

  • Assists the Manager of the SBLC in credit reporting including ALLL methodology, portfolio stratification and risk analysis.

  • May assist in some administrative functions of the department during peak demand time or as requested by the SBLC Manager.

    DIMENSIONS:

    Ability to function in a high volume environment with twenty applications or more weekly and a loan range of $10,000 to $1,000,000 in aggregate bank exposure.

    PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Supervisory: Exercises effective process management and supervisory skills in the areas of daily operations, workload distribution and problem/question resolution. Works in conjunction with the SBLC Manager to complete performance assessments, of members of the underwriting team as well as decisions relative to addition to or terminations of staff.

  • Loan Origination/Underwriting: Commit to, and work diligently toward, arriving at a decision on each loan submitted within a reasonably acceptable timeframe from receipt of complete loan application.

  • Loan Approval Authority:The incumbent will be granted loan approval authority up to $500,000 commensurate with experience, proven record of prudent credit decisions and sound judgment.

  • Portfolio Management: Assists in the evaluation of SBLC portfolio of loans and determine risk characteristics thereof.

  • Product Support:Whether a bank customer, BBO, branch manager or market manager, the incumbent is expected to provide excellent product support to the customer. This may include collection calls, general customer inquiries or intra-bank training.

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Language, reasoning, and analytical skills normally acquired through completion of a Bachelor’s Degree and/or professional work experience.

  • Three to five years of credit underwriting experience with a focus on small business lending.

  • Strong customer service and communication skills both verbal and written.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook.

    PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:

  • Prior experience with SageWorks/Abrigo suite of products

  • Prior experience in SBA lending.

  • Prior experience with ETRAN and other SBA-related platforms.

  • Prior experience with supervising direct reports.

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to travel
