Position Description

This position announcement is for Automotive Mechanic Leader - a full-time Civil Service position in General Services. This position coordinates, performs and oversees skilled repair and maintenance work on light duty motor vehicles (automobiles and trucks with GVWR of 19,900 or less) and related equipment. Performs related duties as required.

The men and women in Metro’s General Services Department are there to make sure the rest of government works. From ensuring that our city’s vehicles run safely and smoothly, to keeping city buildings up to par to providing printing services and more, General Services is the support that allows other Metro departments to focus and achieve their missions.

Typical Duties

  • Coordinates and assists with repair and maintenance of motor vehicles and equipment.

  • Inspects vehicles and equipment to determine repair needs.

  • Inspects work in progress and reinspects upon completion.

  • Checks for compliance with acceptable practices and procedures.

  • Monitors work performed by comparison of time used against acceptable standard.

  • Instructs and assists mechanics in difficult repair work.

  • Performs difficult repairs or difficult steps in repair work.

  • Examines tools and equipment for proper use and care.

  • Performs administrative duties.

  • Prepares work orders and distributes work assignments.

  • Keeps parts room abreast of parts needed and parts on hand.

  • Assists in maintaining parts and supply inventory.

  • Conducts safety training programs and enforces safety regulations.

  • Attends seminars and training as needed.

  • May coordinate and lead a shift.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent and four (4) years experience in repairing and maintaining motor vehicles and equipment.

OR

Completion of Automotive Repair studies from an accredited trade school and three (3) years of experience repairing light duty motor vehicles and/or equipment

No Substitutions will be considered for this position

LICENSES REQUIRED

Valid Driver License

A.S.E. Master Certification in the Automotive field

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Employee must furnish proper tools to perform the job.

This is an evening shift position working from 3:00 pm until 11:30 pm

Note: Per Metro Ordinance No. SO94-1078. All employees of the Metropolitan Government shall be residents of the State of Tennessee or become residents of the state within six (6) months of employment as a prerequisite to employment with the Metropolitan Government.

Preferred Experience, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Experience in customer service in an automotive repair shop

• Experience leading experienced and inexperienced mechanics

• Experience in operating diagnostic equipment

• Experience documenting and communicating repair work requests
