Eaton Corporation Power Supply Engineer in Torrance, California

Eaton’s Aerospace Division is currently seeking a Power Supply Engineer to join our team. This position is based at our Torrance, CA facility.

The expected annual salary range for this role is $91500.03 - $134200.04 a year.

What you’ll do:

The Power Supply Engineer will be responsible for detailed design and documentation of switch mode DC/DC, AC/DC converters, DC/AC inverters, power factor correction utilizing latest power topologies and technology including high voltage power distribution systems. Duties may also include supporting existing products, product derivative extensions by enhancing performance levels, reducing manufacturing & product costs, and implementing quality / reliability improvements. You will collaborate with senior engineers and directors to drive Eaton Aerospace electrification strategy, with a goal to expand our footprint in electric aircraft and personal air taxis (EVTOL, ECTOL).

In this role, you will:

• Generate reliable, cost effective, manufacturable power supply and distribution design solutions that meet or exceed the needs of customer applications as well as comply with all applicable governing regulatory standards (UL, CE, ISO, etc.) Mil and DO-160 standards.

• Administer Electronics Engineering principles to identify and understand issues, and to generate design solutions for various product development challenges associated with power supplies.

• Ability to work with members of an engineering department or resources from other Eaton groups / divisions to deliver high quality technical deliverables on time. Develops and maintains a culture of accountability. Provides technical advice and guidance to this team. Creates opportunities for growth and development and improves employee satisfaction, product expertise, etc.

• Learn and integrate Design For Six Sigma tools and approaches, engineering simulation & modeling software, and phase-gate development processes for power supply and distribution design and development activities

• Interface with manufacturing and quality assurance personnel in establishing quality requirements for power supply and distribution products

• Aid in generating technical papers, technical articles, patent disclosures, and technical discussions under the guidance of more experienced engineers.

• Participate in the development of production tooling and assembly fixtures to enable error-proof and cost-effective production of power supplies.

• Achieve familiarity with the products of the corporation common to activity and study the engineering and products of competitors

• Be proficient on DC/DC conversion, AC/DC front ends, DC/AC inverter, power distribution systems, analog and digital control theory and loop compensation, use of latest wide band gap (WBG) technology especially GaN and SiC Fets, high frequency magnetic design, EMI, schematic capture, and PCB layout

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s or Graduate level degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited institution

  • Minimum five (5) years of Power Electronics and System Engineering experience.

  • This position requires use of information or access to hardware which is subject to the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR). All applicants must be U.S. persons within the meaning of ITAR. ITAR defines a U.S. person as a U.S. Citizen, U.S. Permanent Resident (i.e. ‘Green Card Holder’), Political Asylee, or Refugee.

  • No relocation benefit is being offered for this position. Only candidates that currently reside within the immediate geographical area of 50 miles of Torrance, CA will be considered. Active Duty Military Service member candidates are exempt from the geographical area limitation

  • Must be able to work in the United States without corporate sponsorship now and within the future

Preferred qualifications:

  • Degree master’s or PhD in Electrical Engineering or in Power Electronics from accredited institution.

  • Background in, Mil Stds 461, 704 etc., DO-160, DO-178, DO-254 stds, UL compliance requirements.

  • Background in both FPGA and micro-controller design and validation

Skills:

  • Minimum one (1) year experience with the following:

  • High density, highly efficient and high-power design technology.

  • Experience with various Power Conversion topologies including resonant and soft switching topologies.

  • Analog and digital control loop, magnetics design, EMI and safety rules and regulations.

  • Thermal management architecture

  • Aerospace high voltage and low voltage power distribution unit design

  • Knowledge in Aerospace high voltage power distribution design; architecture and component selection, mechanical packaging, sensing and protection, thermal management, battery pre-charging, communication, and reporting.

  • Knowledge of simulation tools: PLECS, Matlab, Simulink, Altium, Solidworks, Microsoft Office

  • Project management experience
